A Message From Diane: A Focus On Jobs
Last week was a whirlwind as I traveled the state and met with many of the folks who help drive New Mexico's economy - our small business owners.
Small businesses are the backbone of our state's economy, and I have always believed it's important to get out of Santa Fe and sit down with these leaders who work so hard to strengthen our communities and create jobs.
Last week I spent time with small business owners in Albuquerque, Alamogordo, Ruidoso, Carlsbad, Silver City and Las Cruces. Not surprisingly, during these tough times, some of the business owners shared stories about the challenges they're facing.
But you know what - I also heard a lot of stories of hope and optimism. I spoke to business owners who pushed themselves to build a better product or who are taking a chance and expanding. There is no question in my mind that the entrepreneurial spirit in our state has never been stronger. And that's why I love New Mexico - we are a relentless people, always looking towards the opportunities of the future.
It reminded me why November's election is so important. We need a governor who is focused every day on building a high-wage, high-tech economy - and a workforce that's prepared to compete for those 21st century jobs. We need a governor with a positive vision for turning this economy around and charting a new way for New Mexico.
What we don't need is what we saw from the Republican Party this past week - an incessant string of baseless and negative attacks. The people of New Mexico deserve better. New Mexicans deserve a leader with new, innovative and positive ideas for positioning New Mexico for the economic recovery.
Now is not the time to retreat in fear and throw rocks from the bleachers. Now is the time for leaders to stand up and bring forward ideas to kick-start our economy and make government work better for all New Mexicans.
That's what I am committed to do. I hope you will join me.
